LOOKING BACK, SEEING TOMORROW
As I scribbled the date 1-1-13
On the poet’s slate
My heart leapt with joy and
I exclaimed: waoh!
So it is 2013 already
So this is 2013 that I live in now
So this is the long, long 2013 awaited
So this is the 2013 talked about
With so much anticipation
So this is 2013 that looked so far away
Like a long journey into an unknown but
Desired road of life
Looking back, I see
The many scenes of last year
In the performing theatre of my mind
I hear the stories told by 2012
I laugh uncontrollably at the jokes cracked
I cry at the pains of the death
Of fallen heroes
With whom we played, talked, reasoned,
Shared life; but are no more
Have made their way
To the Great Beyond
I remember friends that have been
The ones that walked in and out of my life
Those that remained still
The joys of friendship and companionship
I see the roads I have walked;
The times I was
A stranger;
A friend;
A visitor;
A member.
I look back at the wealth of experiences
Stored in the mind’s reservoir
Some, I want to re-live
Happy moments, celebrations, promotion,
New life, good results, reunion
Others I desire to forever wipe out
Like the whirlwinds does of rubbish
The broken promises
The sleeps of dreams never come true
And in a moment’s turn
I look into tomorrow
Filled with hope, filled with many plans,
Many wishes, resolutions, intentions
I see a tomorrow occupied
With “things to do”
“things that ought to be done”
“things that were undone, push aside”
New ideas, better strategies, new beginnings
And I ponder the thought:
We look back and see tomorrow
And now is past
But alas! I surrender!
To Tomorrow with a heart of praise
Seeing only the best it has to offer
And I speak into tomorrow:
Let not tomorrow pass
Without my [thy] notice
Let not yesterday be a story untold
Let not now be unlived
But let every day, moment,
Be given a chance to BE
In this new year long waited for;
2013.
