Supporters of Niger’s junta rally in Niamey

Reading Time: < 1 minute
Today is Niger’s Independence Day and thousands have poured out in Niamey protesting Ecowas sanctions and celebrating ”kicking French out”. I spoke to a Nigerien just before this Live hit and he told me “Today is indeed our independence and freedom from France and any puppet leader doing their bidding”.
Another told me “Independence didn’t happen in 1960, it happened this year, 2023, now we are truly independent. We can pilot our affairs by ourselves”
Interesting times indeed. This coup is clearly pointing to deeper issues.
And the people seem resolute.
